Down 1-0, Dundas’ Tyler Jones set scoring in motion for the sixth inning as the Dukes beat Blaine 6-1 in their first-round state tournament game in Jordan.
Jones singled with two on in the sixth inning to drive in JT Engeswick for Dukes’ first run of the game. Jonathan Bishop kept the momentum going with a two-out, two-run single followed by Carson Jones’ RBI single.
Dundas (35-9) cushioned its 4-1 lead in the eighth inning with Haydn Lanoue’s RBI single. Bishop also scored a run on an error.
Blaine (29-5) had its only lead in the fifth inning, 1-0, when Justin Gominsky hit a home to break a scoreless tie. The Fusion only mustered five other hits, getting out-hit 10-6 and committing two fielding errors as their season ended.
Todd Mathison pitched a complete game victory for Dundas with nine strikeouts and no walks. Dundas will play Sunday’s winner between Cold Spring and Shakopee Aug. 24 in Shakopee at 7:30 p.m.
Northfield 9, Champlin 1
Aldon Severson knocked a three-run third inning home run for Northfield as the Knights cruised to a 9-1 victory over the Champlin LoGators.
Severson took the second pitch and went deep, scoring Eric Pittman and Tommy McDonald.
Pittman and Severson built on Northfield’s 2-0 inning where Scott Benjamin got things going for the Knights on an RBI double to score Nick Bomhauser. Sam Maus also scored in the inning when Severson took a hit by pitch with bases loaded.
Champlin’s lone run came in the fourth inning when Jeff Heuer singled to score Josh Peterson. The LoGators mustered six hits and had two fielding errors.
Northfield advances to face Sunday’s winner between Chaska and Moorhead Aug. 24 at 5 p.m. in New Prague.
Forest Lake 19, Hibbing 1
Jeff Brooks single-handily dominated Hibbing with 5-for-5 hitting, five runs scored and seven RBI in Forest Lake’s 19-1 romp over the Miners.
Brooks hit two homers and singled three times in the process. Noah Brown also had a big hitting day with six RBI on 3-for-5 hitting and a run scored.
Forest Lake also got a strong game from Brandon Rogers, who hit a three-run double and scored once, too. Drew Cremisino had two RBI on 1-for-2 hitting.
Hibbing scored once in the second inning when Jamie Steinberg came home during Jeff Korpi’s ground out to first base.
Forest Lake faces Sunday’s Miesville-Victoria winner Aug. 24 at 5 p.m. in Shakopee.
Chanhassen 12, Elko 3
Brandon Arnold launched three home runs, including a grand slam, for Chanhassen on a 12-3 express trip to the second round in beating Elko.
Before Arnold ever got going deep, the Chanhassen Red Birds took off flying with four runs in the bottom of the first inning. That included Adrian Turner driving in Arnold during the first inning. Justin Anderson had sparked the Red Birds’ bats with a three-run home run afterward.
Chanhassen will play Sunday’s Coon Rapids-Sauk Rapids winner Aug. 24 in New Prague at 7:30 p.m.
