Chanhassen 7, Moorhead 2
The rematch is set though the side of the bracket is reversed for Miesville and Chanhassen.
The Red Birds advanced to the Class B championship game Monday at noon in Shakopee after beating Moorhead 7-2. Chanhassen will meet Miesville there for the second straight year but the Red Birds will have to win twice to dethrone the two-time defending champion Mudhens.
Chanhassen went to work in the third inning against the Brewers when Adrian Turner reached on an error, moved to second on a bunt, stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly from Riley Johnson. Zach Hoffmann’s single scored Garrett Fischer and Justin Anderson doubled to score Hoffmann for a 3-0 lead.
Riley Johnson scored in the fifth inning after an infield single from Shawn Riesgraf to extend the lead to 4-0.
Fischer added an RBI double in the sixth to give Chanhassen a 5-0 lead that got threatened in the eighth inning.
Spencer Flaten singled with one out and Mike Peschel reached on an error. After Joe Hallock walked, Tanner Adam hit a ground-rule double to make it 5-2.
The Red Birds got the runs back in the eighth after Matt Smith and Turner hit back-to-back one-out singled. Fischer picked up his second RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly to score Logan Spitzack, who ran for Smith. Fischer finished 2-for-4 with a run and Smith finished 2-for-3 with two runs.
Johnson picked up his second RBI of the game with a base hit to score Turner and make it a 7-2 game. Johnson went 2-for-5 with a run.
Dominic Reed kept Moorhead hitless through four innings and threw eight innings in the win. He struck out six and walked three.
Brook Lyter threw the first 5 ⅔ innings for Moorhead. He gave up five runs, four earned, on 10 hits, walked one and struck out one.
Moorhead 5, Northfield 4
It was a familiar meeting for Northfield and Moorhead Sunday in New Prague and once again Moorhead advanced with a 5-4 victory for a chance to play in the championship game.
Last season the Brewers defeated the Knights 5-2 before losing to Miesville and missing their chance at making a trip to the title game. But Northfield beat Moorhead 4-2 in this year's tournament Aug. 24.
Moorhead will meet Chanhassen at 7:30 p.m. for a shot at Miesville in the Class B championship after a wild finish against Northfield.
The Brewers loaded the bases in the ninth twice and the second time they cashed in when a throw from shortstop to second base came late and allowed Derek Dormanen to score the game winning run.
It looked like Northfield might escape from the inning after a ground ball to short turned into a double play. The Knights got the force out at home and threw to third to get two outs.
Moorhead’s run through the consolation bracket continued after beating Sauk Rapids 4-2 and Dundas 2-1 before bowing out to the Knights.
The Brewers held a 3-0 lead after the first inning when Tanner Adam doubled to score Spencer Flaten and Mike Peschel. Adam later scored on a balk to make it 3-0.
Northfield chipped away at the lead when it got two runs in the bottom of the second. Scott Benjamin doubled to bring in Nick Bornhauser and Sam Maus.
In the fifth Aldon Severson’s single scored Eric Pittman to tie the game and Pittman put the Knights in front in the sixth with on a fielder’s choice to score Bornhauser from third.
Moorhead managed to tie the game in the eighth when Spencer Flaten singled to right field to score pinch runner Turner Storm, who came on for Chris Clemenson, who drew a leadoff walk. Storm moved to second on a bunt and got to third on a single from Denver Blinn.
Northfield finished with 10 hits and chased Moorhead starter Jason Beilke after six innings. Beilke allowed four runs on eight hits, walked three and struck out two.
Knights starter Eli Patrikus settled in on the mound after the first inning. He went eight innings, struck out one, walked three and allowed four runs, three earned on 13 hits.
